Tottenham continue their slump with a home defeat to Aston Villa in the English Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur continued their poor run of form with a 2-3 home defeat to Aston Villa in the fifth round of the English Premier League on Saturday.

The London side failed to appease their fans after their 1-3 loss to Liverpool on Tuesday, which saw them eliminated from the English Professional Football League Cup (Carabao Cup), further increasing pressure on Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham’s head coach.

A naive defensive error by Tottenham left-back Andrew Robertson, who failed to clear a loose ball inside the penalty area, allowed Abou Cissé to pass to Johan Manzambi, who easily finished the ball into the net. Aston Villa took the lead in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time.

In the second half, Tottenham struck back with a goal by Ghanaian Mohammed Kudus in the 60th minute, but the goal was disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for an offside against Andrew Robertson.

Tottenham’s troubles deepened when they conceded a second goal, scored by Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson in the 67th minute following a counter-attack.

Emi Buendía added a third goal for the visitors with a powerful long-range shot that nestled into the top-left corner in the 79th minute.

From a pass by Kudus, Conor Gallagher pulled one back for Tottenham in the 86th minute, scoring the London side’s first Premier League goal of the season, as Spurs fans left the stands in frustration over yet another defeat.

Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke added a second goal for Tottenham in the 98th minute, but it came too late.

With this result, Tottenham suffered their third defeat, leaving them with two points in 18th place. Aston Villa, meanwhile, secured their first Premier League win of the season, moving up to 15th place with four points in the final matchday before the international break.

In the next round, Tottenham will face a tough away test against Manchester United at Old Trafford on October 10, while Aston Villa will host Brentford on the same day. Brentford had thrashed Chelsea 3-0 on Friday.
