Kuwaiti Embassy in Lisbon: Be aware of Portugal's face-covering ban law, effective September 23

The Embassy of the State of Kuwait in Lisbon confirmed on Saturday that the new law prohibiting the wearing of clothing that conceals the face or prevents it from being visible in public places in Portugal will come into effect on September 23 of this month.

In a statement, the embassy said that violations of the new law are punishable by a fine ranging from 400 euros (approximately $459.40) to 3,000 euros (approximately $3,445.30).

It clarified that the new law bans face covering in streets, public places, and facilities providing services to citizens, as well as in events, sports activities, and demonstrations.

The embassy noted that the law also criminalizes forcing any person to conceal their face through threats, violence, coercion, or abuse of authority. In such cases, the penalty may extend to two years in prison or a fine, with enhanced penalties if the victim is a minor.

The embassy called on Kuwaiti citizens to respect and comply with the laws and regulations in force in Portugal during their visits, emphasizing the importance of familiarizing themselves with local legal requirements to avoid legal liability or fines.

It affirmed its readiness to provide the necessary assistance and guidance to citizens in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures.

The Portuguese National Assembly (Parliament) approved the law on July 17 last year, and it was published in the official gazette on August 24 last year, entering into force 30 days after publication.
