Kuwait: Targeting oil tankers violates human rights due to environmental impacts that threaten the right to life

Kuwait emphasized on Friday that targeting oil tankers constitutes a grave violation of human rights, warning of its severe environmental consequences and the resulting threat to the right to life.

This was stated in a statement delivered by Dr. Nada Al-Dhabib, Second Secretary of Kuwait’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, during the general debate on the third item of the agenda of the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council. She affirmed the importance of protecting and promoting human rights comprehensively and without selectivity.

She noted that the protection and promotion of rights “admit no fragmentation or selectivity,” considering developmental stability and social justice as two fundamental pillars for ensuring human dignity. This requires a balanced approach that ensures the integration of all dimensions of human rights without prioritizing one right over another.

Al-Dhabib reiterated Kuwait’s call to consolidate a constructive approach to international cooperation based on substantive dialogue, and to move away from politicization and the application of multiple standards in addressing human rights issues.
