Islamic Cooperation: Kuwait's mediation role is a value-added
Speaking to KUNA in his first press interview since being elected Secretary-General, Idriss Jazairy said that Kuwait’s role in diplomacy, mediation, and humanitarian work, along with its established track record in these areas, adds significant value to the organization’s trajectory, particularly at a stage where there is a growing need for increased dialogue, consensus, and solidarity among member states.
He pointed to the potential to build on Kuwait’s humanitarian legacy to develop joint institutional initiatives and enhance coordination in international forums. This would strengthen the unified Islamic stance on priority issues and challenges, and help transform existing cooperation into more effective and sustainable partnerships that serve the interests of member states and bolster the presence of the Islamic world on the international stage.
In this regard, he expressed his desire to visit Kuwait to enhance consultation and coordination with Kuwaiti officials on issues of concern to the Islamic world.
Regarding the priorities he will place at the top of the organization’s agenda, Idriss Jazairy stated that “the coming phase requires genuine reform of the (Islamic Cooperation) to shift it from managing crises to generating initiatives, and from issuing decisions to implementing them.”
He outlined his strategic vision, which is based on six pillars: institutional reform to enhance the organization’s efficiency; strengthening unity and solidarity among member states; supporting security and stability and resolving conflicts; building economic, scientific, and technological partnerships; investing in youth, women, and human capital; and enhancing the organization’s presence and international influence.
When asked about the priority of the Palestinian cause within the organization’s agenda, he said that the Palestinian issue remains the central issue that tops the organization’s concerns and work agenda. The organization prioritizes continuing diplomatic efforts to strengthen partnerships with international organizations to mobilize international support for implementing a two-state solution, exposing Israeli violations through media, and supporting legal efforts to hold the Israeli occupation accountable for the crimes committed against the Palestinian people, their land, and their holy sites.
