"Environment": Supporting international efforts to protect the ozone layer

The General Environmental Authority (GEA) affirmed that protecting the ozone layer is one of the most prominent aspects of international environmental cooperation, noting Kuwait’s commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at preserving this vital layer and mitigating the impacts of ozone-depleting substances.

Sheikha Al-Abdullah, Director of the Public Relations and Media Department at the GEA, told KUNA on the occasion of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, “This occasion, observed annually on September 16, highlights the global efforts achieved in this field and renews the commitment to continue joint environmental work.”

She stated that the GEA plays a crucial role in monitoring environmental commitments related to ozone layer protection by coordinating with relevant entities and tracking substances subject to international controls, while also supporting the transition to safer environmental alternatives and practices in line with Kuwait’s obligations under international environmental agreements.

Al-Abdullah added that the ozone layer serves as a vital natural shield for the Earth, contributing to the protection of living organisms and humans from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. She noted that protecting the ozone layer is an important model of successful international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges, and that maintaining it requires continued adherence to international agreements and the promotion of sound environmental practices.

In another development, the Kuwait Association for Environmental Protection emphasized Kuwait’s commitment, through various relevant entities, to fulfilling its obligations and activating its role in international agreements and attached protocols concerning ozone layer protection.

Dima Al-Adwani, a member of the Association’s Board of Directors, told KUNA on the occasion of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, “Kuwait has prepared and implemented numerous projects and programs at both the national and regional levels in this regard.”

Al-Adwani stressed the importance of the roles and efforts of government entities, agencies, companies, institutions, civil organizations, and the international community in addressing climate change, repairing the climate system, and protecting the planet to restore its balance, which will help maintain the recovery status and protect the ozone layer.
