Gold prices rose by approximately 1% on Wednesday as market participants adopted a cautious stance ahead of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decision, which is widely expected to include an interest rate hike.
Spot gold prices climbed 0.99% to $4,334 per ounce, after hitting their lowest level in over a month on Monday.
Data from CME Group’s FedWatch tool indicates that traders currently price in a 92.4% probability of a rate hike of at least 25 basis points in the United States later on Wednesday.
Frank Walbaum, a market analyst at the trading platform Naga.com, said, “A hawkish stance by the Federal Reserve could lead to lower gold prices, while any dovish comments could ease bets on rate hikes and help the metal recover. Traders are also monitoring oil prices and developments in the Middle East.”
Gold is often viewed as a hedge against inflation, but rising interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding the precious metal, which yields no return.
