U.S. House of Representatives votes to end war with Iran for the third time

The U.S. House of Representatives voted for the third time in favor of ending the war with Iran, passing a resolution under the War Powers Resolution that would curtail President Donald Trump’s ability to continue military operations without congressional approval.

The vote, held late Tuesday night, resulted in 220 votes in favor and 204 against, mirroring earlier attempts this summer, with a slightly larger number of Republicans joining all Democrats in voting to end the conflict. None of these resolutions reached the president’s desk, where Trump is highly likely to veto the measure.

Representative Seth Moulton, a Democrat from Massachusetts who served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Iraq War and championed the resolution, asked, “Do you remember when Donald Trump said this war would only last a few weeks?”

He argued that it was time for Congress to “ask the hard questions, as the Constitution directs us to do, rather than submit to another administration seeking to wage wars.”

Republican Representative Brian Mast of Florida, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, questioned which military resources Democrats wanted to withdraw from the region, noting that Iran still posed a threat.

Mast said Trump opposed “endless wars, and that is what puts an end to them,” referring to decades of hostility with Iran.
