UN Security Council calls for de-escalation and resumption of dialogue in Yemen

Khaled Khiari, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, stated during an emergency meeting in New York that the situation in and around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has become increasingly turbulent in recent days.

Khiari added that fighting has intensified along Yemen’s western coast, with the Houthis advancing toward the strait and declaring control over several islands in the southern Red Sea.

He noted that the fighting has forced civilians to flee their homes and placed already strained humanitarian operations under increasing pressure.

He said that at least 125,000 people have been displaced across Yemen since the beginning of the month. During the same period, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights reported eight deaths and 32 injuries.

The United Nations stated that the fighting has extended beyond Yemen, with reports of Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia.

Khiari said: “We call on all parties to protect civilians, respect international humanitarian law, and facilitate safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid, so that desperately needed assistance can reach communities in need.”

He added: “What is needed now is sustained engagement to de-escalate tensions, prevent further escalation, and protect freedom of navigation. The parties in Yemen should prioritize dialogue and engage constructively in the United Nations-led efforts to reach a negotiated political solution.”

It is worth noting that the Houthis took control of northern Yemen in 2014, including the capital Sanaa, and continue to control large areas there.
