Opinion: From Knowledge to Wealth: What Does It Mean to Invest Your Money? (4)

At its core, investing means placing your capital in an asset that you expect will generate a benefit or return in the future, while accepting in advance that the outcome is not guaranteed. An “asset” is anything of value that can be owned, and the most common investment assets include stocks, bonds and sukuk, investment funds, and real estate.

Each type has its own rationale. With stocks, you buy a small share of ownership in a company. With bonds and sukuk, your investment is linked to financing an entity under specific terms. An investment fund pools money from multiple investors and manages it according to a disclosed policy. Real estate holds a special place in the hearts of people in Kuwait and the Gulf; it can generate rental income or profit from appreciation in value over time.

The existence of multiple types does not mean you should choose one and stick with it forever. On the contrary, as we will see later, a key principle of investing is diversifying capital across several assets, because each has a different level of risk, liquidity, and expected return.

The question that deserves to be dismissed from the outset is: What is the best investment?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. What suits a young person at the start of their career does not suit a parent saving for their children, nor an employee nearing retirement. Goals, time horizons, and liquidity needs vary from person to person. That is why any serious session with a financial advisor begins with questions about you, not with a presentation of products.

Here, a crucial distinction must be made between saving and investing.

Investing accepts a degree of volatility in exchange for the opportunity of higher returns over the longer term. Emergency funds for next month should not be treated the same as capital intended for a goal ten years away.

Moreover, investing is not always a race for the highest return. Some investments serve to generate regular periodic income, others aim for capital growth, and others seek a balance between the two. Before choosing a type, ask yourself: What role do I want this money to play within my plan?
