Cyclone sweeps through a French village, leaving dozens injured

A storm struck a village in southwestern France on Monday, injuring 41 people and damaging hundreds of homes, according to authorities.

French authorities issued an orange alert for storms across large parts of the southwest, while several areas experienced power outages and disruptions to transport.

In the Aude department, officials canceled the third stage of the Tour de France cycling race, which was scheduled to take place in the region, after a hailstorm forced cyclists to take shelter.

More than 120 emergency responders were dispatched to the site, according to local authorities. Fifteen injured people were taken to hospital, including a pregnant woman who was injured when her house collapsed on her, her husband told Agence France-Presse.

The storms that swept through southern France disrupted transport networks, causing train delays and road closures, as well as delays and cancellations of flights at Bordeaux, Marseille, Nice, and Toulouse airports, and even in Paris to the north, according to Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot.
