Syria welcomes its removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism

Syria welcomed on Monday the United States’ decision to approve its removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, expressing appreciation for the step, which it described as a significant shift opening a new chapter in its international relations.

In a statement posted on the Telegram platform, Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates emphasized that the decision, taken after decades of Syria’s inclusion on the list, would contribute to supporting economic recovery efforts, creating suitable conditions for reconstruction, and enhancing stability and security within Syria and the region, thereby positively impacting the Syrian people and neighboring countries.

Syria expressed hope that additional steps would follow, contributing to the lifting of remaining restrictions that hinder Syria’s recovery and supporting its return to its natural and active role in its Arab and international environment.

Syria stressed that it looks forward to deepening strategic partnerships and expanding the horizons of cooperation with the United States and the international community, in ways that serve common interests and support stability, development, and economic cooperation within the country.

In a related development, Syrian Finance Minister Yasser al-Burhani described the removal of Syria’s name from the list of state sponsors of terrorism as a historic diplomatic achievement that would contribute to strengthening Syria’s integration into the global economic and financial system, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The United States officially removed Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism on Monday, following the expiration of a 45-day congressional notification period. President Donald Trump had informed Congress in July of his administration’s intention to remove Syria from the list.
