Deterioration in the health condition of Norway's King Harald V in the hospital

The Norwegian Royal Court announced on Sunday that the health of King Harald V had deteriorated over the weekend while he was hospitalized.

The Royal Court stated that the 89-year-old monarch is receiving antibiotics to treat a bacterial bloodstream infection and has responded to the treatment.

The statement added: “The situation is stable. His Majesty will remain at Oslo University Hospital and is on sick leave until further notice.”

The king has been hospitalized since last Monday and underwent cortisone treatment in recent weeks due to hemolytic anemia, a form of anemia.

Harald has been experiencing health issues for some time. In February, he was hospitalized while on vacation in Tenerife due to an infection. In March 2024, he had a pacemaker implanted after falling ill while on vacation in Malaysia.

The health of other members of the Norwegian royal family has also been a cause for concern recently.

Queen Sonja was hospitalized in May after suffering from heart problems. The king’s sister, Princess Astrid, also suffers from heart weakness. Crown Princess Mette-Marit suffers from chronic pulmonary fibrosis and underwent a lung transplant last June.
