Ukrainian Ambassador: Wholeheartedly and fully in solidarity with Kuwait against Iranian aggression
Ukrainian Ambassador to Kuwait, Maksym Subh, affirmed that his country is “wholeheartedly and fully” with Kuwait in the face of Iranian aggression, noting that Kuwaiti-Ukrainian relations are built on solid foundations of friendship and mutual respect. Kuwait was the first Gulf state to open an embassy in the capital, Kyiv, in 1995, following the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries on April 18, 1993.
Subh, speaking at a press conference held at the embassy premises to mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s restoration of independence and the 33rd anniversary of Kuwaiti-Ukrainian diplomatic relations, stated that the two countries have succeeded over more than three decades in developing their ties to encompass political, economic, humanitarian, security, and defense fields. He emphasized that the coming phase holds wide opportunities to elevate these relations to more advanced levels.
He pointed out that the Ukrainian and Kuwaiti peoples share a special and deep understanding of the meaning of independence and sovereignty, noting that Kuwait endured a painful experience when it was invaded and occupied in 1990, but regained its freedom and sovereignty with the support of the international community and its adherence to international law.
He clarified that August 24 marks the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s restoration of independence, stressing that this day is not merely a national holiday, but embodies the aspirations of the Ukrainian people, which have spanned long centuries toward freedom, sovereignty, and the right to self-determination.
Subh revealed that defense cooperation between his country and Kuwait “has entered into force,” and that coordination has effectively begun regarding military and defense cooperation. He noted that the agreement between the two sides provides a legal framework that opens the door for them to enter into a “genuine, qualitative partnership” benefiting both countries. He stressed that the objective of such cooperation or signing a military cooperation agreement is not to sell or market the drones available in Ukraine, but rather to discuss a comprehensive system of military and defense cooperation.
In response to a question about whether Ukraine could supply Kuwait with drones, Subh relayed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s affirmation that Ukraine is “wholeheartedly and fully” with Kuwait and other Gulf states in the face of Iranian aggression. He praised Kuwait’s steadfast position supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, expressing his appreciation for the humanitarian support provided by Kuwait to the Ukrainian people since the beginning of the war.
He affirmed that there are significant potential for expanding cooperation between Kuwait and Ukraine in the fields of trade, investment, food security, agriculture, energy, technology, advanced industries, defense, education, culture, and tourism. He emphasized that his country is grateful to Kuwait, its leadership, government, and people, for their friendship and support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
