Snoring... When the Sound During Sleep Becomes a Message from the Body

It’s a question we hear often, and the answer may sometimes lie in the sound that fills the bedroom all night long—snoring.

For many people, snoring is merely an annoying noise; it disturbs those sleeping nearby and can become a source of jokes or complaints within the family. However, in some cases, it is not just a habit but may signal that breathing during sleep is not normal.

During sleep, the muscles of the throat and tongue relax, which can narrow the airway. As air passes through this narrowed passage, the surrounding tissues vibrate, producing the sound of snoring.

Airflow may briefly stop, oxygen levels drop, and the brain sends signals to reopen the airway. The person may partially wake up without realizing it. If this process repeats many times throughout the night, sleep becomes fragmented and unrefreshing.

Spending eight hours in bed does not necessarily mean eight hours of good sleep. A person may wake up feeling tired, experience daytime drowsiness, poor concentration, or morning headaches, despite having spent enough time sleeping.

Not everyone who snores suffers from sleep apnea. However, loud, persistent snoring—especially if accompanied by noticeable pauses in breathing, choking or gasping during sleep, or excessive daytime sleepiness—warrants medical evaluation.

Our perspective on snoring changes here: it is not always just a social issue or a noise that bothers a partner. In some cases, it may be the first sign of a disorder that silently disrupts sleep throughout the night.

The person sleeping next to you may be the first to notice a problem you are unaware of.

Ultimately, healthy sleep means more than just closing your eyes for a certain number of hours. It involves breathing properly, progressing through normal sleep stages, and waking up feeling that your body and mind have truly received the rest they need.
