FIFA President Faces Pressure to Resign

Swiss FIFA President Gianni Infantino said he wants to spread the game everywhere in the world, as he faces mounting pressure to step down following the failure of his attempt to sell a stake in FIFA to private investors.

The British Press Association reported that the six Scandinavian federations—Denmark, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Norway, and Sweden—announced in a joint statement on Sunday that they had lost confidence in Infantino, intensifying pressure on him to resign.

Responding to his critics during a visit to the Dominican Republic, where he reaffirmed FIFA’s commitment to correcting global power imbalances in the sport—an apparent implicit criticism of UEFA, one of the three continental confederations that has formally opposed him—Infantino added that during a meeting with members of the Caribbean Football Union at an international youth event, he said: “We have transformed FIFA and brought it to where it is today. I reiterate to the members of the Caribbean Football Union that our goal here is one: to spread football across the world.”

He continued: “It is important to communicate, to dialogue, and to express opinions. We have witnessed many events in recent weeks, and it is important that you listen and express your feelings.”
