FIFA penalizes Argentina and its players over incidents at the 2026 World Cup final

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed a series of sanctions on the Argentine Football Association and several players and officials of the national team, following incidents that occurred during various matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including events that took place during the final match against Spain.
The committee decided to fine the Argentine Football Association a total of $321,000 USD for violations related to using a sporting event to organize demonstrations with a non-sporting nature, team misconduct, discrimination and racist abuse, as well as violations concerning match秩序 and security.
Additionally, the committee ordered the Argentine national team to play their next two home matches with a spectator limit of no more than 50% of stadium capacity, due to the violation involving discrimination and racist abuse, according to FIFA’s official website.
The sanctions also require the Argentine Football Association to invest $100,000 of the fine amount in a plan to combat discrimination, with part of the penalty suspended, including a one-match ban and $100,000 of the fine, placing the association under a probationary period.
Following a report submitted by the appointed Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor regarding the incidents during the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, held at the New York–New Jersey Stadium on July 19, the committee imposed additional sanctions on several members of the Argentine national team.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee confirmed that suspension sanctions will be served in the next matches of each relevant national team, in accordance with Article 69, paragraphs 2(a) and 3, of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
The Argentine Football Association and the concerned parties were notified of the committee’s decisions today, with each party granted a 10-day deadline to request a reasoned decision. If such a request is submitted, the decision will be published on FIFA’s official legal website.
