Libya: Steel production halted due to electricity shortages

The state-owned Al-Wataniya television channel reported on Thursday that Libyan National Unity Government Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah ordered the Libyan Iron and Steel Company, the largest of its kind in the country, to halt production due to a shortage of electricity.

The Libyan Iron and Steel Company is one of the few firms outside the energy sector still exporting its products from the North African nation.

The company’s designed capacity is 1.7 million tons of liquid steel annually.

Libya is grappling with an electricity crisis amid soaring temperatures, with power outages lasting up to 10 hours a day in major cities, sparking protests.
