Carbon Faces (4): The Green Face

After the black carried by combustion products and the red that appeared above the ice, we arrive at a completely different face—one whose story does not begin at a smokestack or an icy peak, but at a leaf. It is green carbon, the carbon absorbed by plants and stored by terrestrial ecosystems, foremost among them forests.
The story begins with a process we have known since our school days: photosynthesis. Trees and plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and use sunlight to convert it into organic matter that fuels their growth, while releasing oxygen. Through this mechanism, which appears simple on the surface, forests play a crucial role in the carbon cycle, retaining significant amounts of carbon within trees, roots, and soil for long periods.
However, the importance of green carbon lies not only in the quantity of carbon forests can absorb, but in their ability to store it and keep it out of the atmosphere. Here lies the problem: when forests are cleared or burned, we not only lose a natural means of absorbing carbon dioxide, but some of the stored carbon can be released back into the atmosphere. In other words, we lose the carbon sink and, at the same time, diminish its future capacity to absorb carbon.
Therefore, forest protection is not merely an aesthetic or environmental issue separate from the economy and climate; it is an integral part of managing the carbon budget on our blue planet. Solutions include reducing deforestation, restoring degraded ecosystems, afforestation and reforestation where ecologically appropriate, improving forest and soil management, and protecting biodiversity, which enables these systems to endure.
Nevertheless, discussions about trees must not become an excuse for continuing emissions. Forests are not limitless reservoirs, and tree planting alone cannot offset all the carbon we emit. The real solution lies on two parallel tracks: reducing emissions at their source, and preserving nature’s capacity to absorb what remains.
Here, the green face reveals a beautiful paradox: the carbon we release into the sky can be returned to the earth by nature, provided we leave it with enough forests to carry out this task. Nature holds part of the solution, and our responsibility is not to undermine it with our own hands.
