Sudan: We appreciate Kuwait's significant humanitarian efforts in supporting us

Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mahieddin Salim expressed his country’s appreciation for the significant humanitarian efforts undertaken by the Kuwait Red Crescent Society in supporting the Sudanese people, which underscores the deep fraternal and historical ties binding the two countries and their peoples.

Salim told (KUNA) following his visit to the Kuwait Red Crescent Society headquarters on Thursday that the visit was aimed at conveying thanks on behalf of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Prime Minister Dr. Kamal Idries, and the Sudanese people to the State of Kuwait and the Kuwait Red Crescent Society for their continuous humanitarian efforts and their support for the people of Sudan.

He added that the Kuwait Red Crescent Society was quick to reach out to those in need and affected in Sudan, and at certain stages, it preceded many other bodies and organizations in delivering aid to its rightful recipients, reflecting the deep bonds between the two peoples and the Kuwaiti people’s commitment to standing by their brothers in all circumstances.

He clarified that Kuwaiti support for Sudan has not ceased since the onset of the crisis, with humanitarian aid and relief flights continuing across various stages. He noted that he had closely observed these efforts during his previous tenure in Kuwait, as well as during his responsibilities related to relief efforts in Sudan.

He pointed out that Sudan is currently transitioning from a relief phase to a recovery and reconstruction phase, noting that the Kuwait Red Crescent Society is also proactive in preparing for this stage by initiating serious and organized work to develop joint plans and programs that contribute to supporting recovery and reconstruction efforts.

He emphasized that, for the Sudanese people, Kuwait is not merely a sister state but holds a firm place in their hearts and consciousness. He stressed Sudan’s solidarity with the State of Kuwait and its readiness to stand by it and serve as a pillar of support in all circumstances and stages.

Minister Salim expressed his sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Kuwaiti people, their leadership, and their humanitarian institutions for their stance toward Sudan, praying to God to perpetuate the blessings of security, stability, and prosperity upon the State of Kuwait and to protect it and its people from all harm.

For his part, Khaled Al-Mughnaim, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kuwait Red Crescent Society, told (KUNA) that the Society has been and remains present alongside its brothers in the Republic of Sudan, in line with the State of Kuwait’s entrenched humanitarian approach and its constant desire to extend a helping hand to affected peoples in various circumstances and crises.

Al-Mughnaim added that the Society hastened, since the outbreak of the crisis in 2023, to establish an aerial relief bridge to Port Sudan with a cargo of approximately 350 tons of medical, food, and sheltering aid. Kuwait also allocated $6 million for humanitarian support in Sudan, split equally between the Kuwait Red Crescent Society and the Kuwait Relief Association at $3 million each.

He explained that the Society’s efforts expanded in 2024 with the dispatch of three relief ships carrying approximately 545 tons, including medications for cancer patients, around 1,000 hygiene kits, food, and relief supplies. Additionally, eight air flights were conducted carrying about 140 tons of aid in response to victims of floods and flash floods, including food items, blankets, health supplies, wheelchairs, crutches, and ambulances.

He noted the continuation of the relief bridge in 2025 through two air flights, each carrying approximately 40 tons of tents, food baskets, blankets, and basic necessities, alongside the signing of a $2 million agreement with the International Committee of the Red Cross to support the sustainability of healthcare and enhance access for vulnerable communities in Sudan.

Al-Maghamsi noted that the Society’s interventions extended beyond immediate relief, encompassing projects to support essential services and the distribution of sacrificial meat to 1,414 families in shelters in Port Sudan, alongside collaboration with humanitarian and health partners to strengthen the resilience of affected communities in facing the crisis’s repercussions. He reaffirmed the Society’s commitment to continuing its support for the people of Sudan and enhancing its cooperation with the Sudanese Red Crescent and humanitarian partners, thereby contributing to meeting humanitarian needs, supporting recovery efforts, and improving essential services for those affected.
