France informs Iran's ambassador that two embassy staff members are persona non grata

French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot has declared two employees of the Iranian embassy in France persona non grata, in accordance with Article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, concluded in 1961.

This decision follows the serious attack carried out by Iranian security forces against staff members of the French embassy in Iran on July 19.

This constitutes a blatant violation of international law and the Vienna Conventions, to which Iran is a party, which guarantee the security of diplomatic personnel and form the foundation of relations between states.

A spokesperson for the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs stated that Iranian authorities have not disclosed the circumstances of this deliberate and premeditated attack, nor have they punished those responsible or taken necessary measures to protect the security of our premises and staff, in compliance with their international obligations. Instead, they have chosen to falsely accuse our staff and fabricate allegations of foreign interference to justify their actions. The ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran has been notified of this decision and summoned to the Quai d’Orsay today.
