Rome Announces Signing of Maura

Italian football club AS Roma completed the permanent signing of talented young player Rodrigo Mora from Porto today.

Roma announced the deal in a brief statement but did not disclose the financial details of the transfer. Italian media reported that Mora signed a five-year contract.

Mora, who turned 19 in May last year, appeared visibly emotional, nearly in tears, upon his arrival in the Italian capital on Tuesday, where he was greeted by approximately 500 fans at the airport. The supporters chanted his name as he signed jerseys and memorabilia and posed for photos with them.

Mora, an attacking midfielder, progressed through Porto’s youth academy and scored 16 goals in 80 appearances for the club.

He has not yet made his debut for the senior Portugal national team, but he was included in the squad that won the UEFA Nations League title last year.

Reports indicated that Roma initially offered to pay €7 million ($8 million) for a loan deal, with an option to make the transfer permanent for €40 million ($46 million) at the end of the season.

However, Porto was unwilling to risk Mora returning next season with a diminished market value. After weeks of protracted negotiations, the Portuguese club agreed to receive an upfront fee of €25 million, plus 50% of any future transfer fee. Roma can waive this add-on clause by paying an additional €20 million.
