Great in Their Simplicity

The greatness of a people is not measured solely by the skyscrapers they build or by the number of their scholars and wealthy elites. Sometimes, greatness begins with an individual who has lost their home, their job, and their country, only to wake up one morning in a strange land, learn a new language, and go to work.

This is one of the most compelling Syrian stories worth telling.

During the years of displacement and asylum, achievement sometimes took the form of a mother rebuilding a home for her children, a student returning to their studies, a doctor retaking their licensing exams to practice their profession, or a worker accepting a modest beginning after having once held a skilled job and social standing.

But perhaps the greatest acts of heroism occurred within Syria itself: transforming pain into a challenge, and the challenge into an achievement; turning what happened to them into a catalyst for healing and progress, rather than a prison they remain trapped in. It means regaining confidence after fear, and the ability to dream after loss.

In Germany, the employment rate of Syrian refugees reached approximately 61 percent seven years after their arrival, making them a significant part of the workforce, including in the health sector. Syrian refugee Ryan Shabal was elected mayor of a municipality, while Yusra Mardini, who endured a perilous journey across the sea during her flight, went on to compete in the Olympic Games.

This is not an attempt to construct a myth of “Syrian superiority,” but rather a testament to human resilience revealed when millions were faced with the test of starting from scratch.

It is this very capacity that Syria needs today.

Perhaps what the Syrian person experiences today—caught between hope, the difficulty of making a living, and prolonged waiting—is not easy. Yet, those who challenged war, displacement, and exile, who fought for their dignity and paid heavy prices, are best equipped to endure this transformative phase.

Initiatives by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries toward Syria, reflecting goodwill and enthusiasm for its development and stability support, also deserve great appreciation as expressions of solidarity and fraternity in the region.
