Rights organization calls on FIFA to halt Infantino's re-election plans

The human rights organization Fair Square sent a letter to three members of FIFA’s Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee, calling on them to prevent current FIFA President Gianni Infantino from running for re-election.

The Athletic revealed the contents of the letter on Monday, stating that the organization believes Infantino is ineligible to run again under the provisions of FIFA’s Statutes.

It added that the proposed amendments to the regulations in 2022 were not properly voted on by the FIFA Council.

The decisive question is whether Infantino’s first term, from 2016 to 2019, will be counted as a full term. If so, he would be ineligible to run again, as the FIFA President is limited to three terms.

For his part, Infantino maintains that he completed the final term of former President Joseph Blatter and is entitled to run for a four-year term starting in 2027.

Infantino, 56, is currently the only candidate for the FIFA presidency.
