Marvel Reveals New 'X-Men' Cast... Christopher Abbott as 'Professor X'
Marvel Studios announced the first lineup for the new X-Men team within the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the D23 event on Friday, with the film scheduled for theatrical release on May 5, 2028.
The cast includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kate Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Indira Varma as Rogue, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Maya Boyd as Storm, while Adam Driver portrays the villain Mister Sinister.
The X-Men return to the screen for the first time since the 2019 film *Dark Phoenix*, produced by Fox, which starred James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler.
This generation of X-Men actors appeared in several prequel films in the series, including *X-Men: First Class*, *X-Men: Days of Future Past*, and *X-Men: Apocalypse*, after succeeding the original *X-Men* trilogy cast, which featured Patrick Stewart as Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Halle Berry as Storm, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, among others.
Most of the original cast members, with the exception of Halle Berry and Famke Janssen, will reprise their roles in *Avengers: Doomsday*, scheduled for release this year, where they will encounter characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a confrontation with Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.
Several stars from previous *X-Men* films also returned in the successful movie *Deadpool & Wolverine*, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, while Channing Tatum made his debut as the mutant Gambit, who will also appear in *Avengers: Doomsday*.
The Fox *X-Men* franchise concluded with the 2020 film *The New Mutants*, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, and Maisie Williams. With the new lineup, the X-Men return to the screen as an official part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
