$2 million grant from Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development to support food security in Sudan

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed a grant agreement with the World Food Programme (WFP) today, Thursday, valued at $2 million to help finance the construction and improvement of food storage facilities in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.

In a statement, the Fund said the project aims to provide and enhance the necessary storage capacities for dry food aid in areas suffering from a severe shortage of storage facilities, by rehabilitating several existing structures and constructing new facilities with a total storage capacity of approximately 59,000 metric tons.

It added that these facilities are expected to contribute to securing food aid, improving its storage, and facilitating its distribution, thereby supporting the WFP’s efforts to reach around 7.5 million beneficiaries.

The Fund clarified that the project comprises several key components, including the construction of permanent storage facilities such as steel warehouses and cooling facilities, as well as the development of supporting infrastructure, offices, and security installations.

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development stated that this grant comes within the framework of its partnership with the World Food Programme, which was strengthened by the signing of a memorandum of understanding in February 2025, aimed at supporting cooperation in the fields of food security, humanitarian aid, and development projects, and enhancing the capacity to address challenges facing communities affected by food insecurity.
