US Judge Dismisses Fraud and Bribery Case Against Indian Billionaire Gautam Adani

An American judge on Monday dismissed the lawsuit against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, following the decision of President Donald Trump’s administration to drop fraud and bribery charges against him.

Court documents showed that Brooklyn federal judge Nicholas Garaufis formally approved a motion filed by prosecutors in May to drop the 2024 charges against Adani, which alleged his involvement in a $265 million scheme to bribe Indian officials in exchange for lucrative contracts to supply solar energy.

U.S. media had reported that Adani’s lawyer, Robert Giuffra, who also represents Trump, informed Justice Department officials in April that the businessman would be willing to invest $10 billion in the U.S. economy if the charges were dropped.

The judge had previously questioned whether the alleged investment pledge played a role in the government’s decision to dismiss the case, strongly criticizing the approach taken by Trump-appointed Assistant Attorney General Trent McOtier in pushing to drop the charges.

The Adani Group is one of India’s largest business conglomerates, operating across multiple sectors including ports, power plants, cement factories, and media.

Adani, one of India’s wealthiest businessmen and a public supporter of Trump, has faced allegations of financial fraud in recent years, alongside sharp fluctuations in the stock prices of his companies.

He is also known for his close ties to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as both hail from the state of Gujarat, Modi’s home state.
