Investment consortium including Jeff Bezos close to acquiring stake in English club Liverpool

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is close to finalizing a deal to acquire a stake in English football club Liverpool as part of an investment consortium, according to media reports on Monday.

A spokesperson for the group told AFP that “an investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic investment through a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club.”

Bhatia was recently a shareholder in Queens Park Rangers, which competes in the English Championship.

Sky News reported that the consortium is “close to reaching an agreement to purchase a stake of nearly a third in Liverpool,” with the Fenway Sports Group preparing to announce the deal “as soon as this week.”

Bezos, 62, is one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, with Forbes estimating his net worth at over $280 billion, while Savery’s wealth is estimated at around $33 billion.

Bezos had previously considered submitting bids to purchase the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL), but ultimately decided not to pursue either deal.

Fenway Sports Group, which also owns the American baseball team Boston Red Sox, purchased Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million ($405 million).

In 2023, the group sold a minority stake in the club to the American private investment firm Dynasty Equity.

Liverpool won the English Premier League title in the 2024-2025 season under Dutch manager Arne Slot, but he was dismissed in May following a turbulent campaign.
