Vance: We will not trust Tehran's commitments regarding the Strait of Hormuz and will verify its actions

US Vice President JD Vance said Washington would not trust Tehran’s assurances regarding the Strait of Hormuz and would verify its actions, revealing that Iranian officials had informed the US administration that they did not intend to impose fees on ships transiting the strait.

Vance added in an interview with Fox News, broadcast on Saturday: “We do not trust; we verify. We do not look at people’s words, but at their actions.”

His comments came in response to a question about what outcome Washington considers acceptable in the Strait of Hormuz, where the war has disrupted navigation and energy supplies.

Vance announced that the United States had made “some progress” in its negotiations with Iran over the past few days, but noted that Tehran had not yet offered everything demanded by President Donald Trump’s administration.

He said, “The question is whether they are able, and whether their system is capable, of providing what is necessary for us to be satisfied and feel that we have obtained what we need from these specific negotiations. That has not been decided yet, but I believe we have made some progress over the past few days.”

Vance observed that Iranians were “suffering heavy losses” and wanted an end to the “epic wrath” campaign, without definitively asserting that the Iranian regime could meet US demands.

Vance did not provide details on the changes Washington was seeking, but he threatened to continue pressuring Tehran if it refused to respond.

He said, “If they do not, that is fine as well. We will continue to exert as much pressure as we can and work to bring out the maximum possible amount of oil and gas from the Middle East, so that Americans benefit from lower fuel and energy prices. That is the delicate balance.”
