Saudi Arabia: Iran's brutal attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz constitute an attack on global energy supplies
Saudi Arabia confirmed on Saturday that “Iran’s brazen attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz constitute an attack on global energy supplies, reiterating its full solidarity with and support for the sisterly State of the United Arab Emirates following Tehran’s targeting of a UAE tanker while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz.”
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the Kingdom’s strongest condemnation and denunciation of the targeting of a UAE tanker as it passed through the Strait of Hormuz, affirming that “these unacceptable attacks are assaults on the security and safety of maritime navigation, and on the security of global energy supplies.”
The Kingdom emphasized that “Iran’s continued launching of these attacks constitutes a serious violation of international laws and norms, including United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, which guarantees freedom of navigation and safe passage through maritime corridors.”
The Kingdom placed “the consequences of Iran’s continuation of these brazen attacks squarely on Iran,” calling on “Iran to immediately halt these violations to preserve the security, stability, and safety of the region.”
The Kingdom reiterated its full solidarity with and support for the sisterly State of the United Arab Emirates in the measures it is taking to safeguard its sovereignty and national assets.
Earlier, the UAE’s ADNOC company announced that one of its vessels had been targeted by a missile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The company stated that the attack resulted in no casualties and that the situation had been brought under control.
For its part, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a declaration that this attack constitutes a blatant violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which underscores freedom of navigation and rejects the targeting of commercial vessels or the disruption of international maritime routes. It stressed that targeting commercial navigation and using the Strait of Hormuz as a tool for economic pressure or extortion constitutes acts of piracy by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, posing a direct threat to the stability of the region and its peoples, as well as to global energy security.
