Wildfire smoke doubles air pollution risk for pregnant women

Smoke from wildfires poses an increasing risk to pregnant women, as new research indicates that the rise in fires driven by climate change is exposing more pregnant women to air pollution, despite the decline of traditional pollution sources.
The study, published in the journal *Frontiers in Environmental Health*, tracked exposure levels to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) resulting from wildfires across the United States between 2003 and 2019. Researchers found that although emissions from transportation and industry have decreased, smoke from increasingly frequent and intense wildfires is undermining some of the public health gains achieved.
The study found that exposure to wildfire smoke during pregnancy more than doubled over the 17 years covered by the analysis, particularly in the western United States, where longer fire seasons have become the norm. The results also showed that approximately 65 percent of days when air pollution levels exceeded safe limits for pregnancy were attributable to wildfire smoke.
Researchers stated, “The increase in wildfire activity is systematically undermining the gains made in air quality during pregnancy as a result of reducing emissions from human activities, placing a disproportionate burden on low-income communities, rural areas, and Indigenous communities, with the potential for further progress to be eroded as wildfires intensify.”
Fine particulate matter (PM2.5), microscopic particles capable of penetrating deep into the lungs and entering the bloodstream, has long been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth and low birth weight. Researchers note that PM2.5 from wildfires may be more toxic than pollution from traffic or industrial sources due to its complex chemical composition.
Europe has experienced consecutive summers marked by devastating wildfires in recent years, from Greece and Portugal to Spain and southern France, prompting scientists and health authorities to warn that climate change is creating new public health risks alongside visible destruction.
The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service and health bodies have repeatedly warned that rising temperatures increase the frequency and severity of wildfires, exposing millions of Europeans to smoke that can travel hundreds, even thousands of kilometers across borders.
As the pace of climate change accelerates, experts believe governments should expand health guidelines for vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, by improving smoke trajectory forecasting, issuing early health warnings, and ensuring access to clean indoor air during major wildfire events.
The study highlights a troubling paradox for policymakers: decades of investment in reducing air pollution risks from human activities are being undermined by climate change itself. Even as air quality in cities improves, extreme weather events are creating new pollution sources that public health systems must learn to manage.
