Trump says US ammunition stockpile is "massive"

US President Donald Trump affirmed on Thursday that the United States possesses “massive” quantities of ammunition, threatening to pursue those who spread contrary reports, following a news report about stock shortages and a dispute with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the war with Iran.

The Republican president condemned these reports via his platform, Truth Social, emphasizing that Washington has “massive quantities of ammunition, especially of certain types,” without providing further details.

He added, “In addition, large quantities (of ammunition) are being manufactured and shipped to the United States as needed. Defense companies are building more factories and facilities than at any time in our country’s history.”

The war in the Middle East erupted following a US-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28, prompting Tehran to launch malicious strikes against countries in the region.

On Wednesday evening, The Washington Post published a report stating that Trump had asked the Defense Secretary to clarify the ammunition shortage during a government meeting held at the presidential retreat, Camp David, on Friday.

For its part, CNN reported that the shortage of long-range guided missiles and air defense interceptors had affected Trump’s strategy in the conflict with Iran. It noted that the US military “was nearing depletion of about 80 percent” of its stockpile of THAAD interceptor missiles.

Trump launched a sharp attack on these reports on Thursday, characterizing the leaks as “treason” and threatening their sources with prosecution and efforts to secure “long prison sentences.”

He wrote on the X platform, “I was at Camp David with President Trump and Secretary Hegseth. This never happened at all.”

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Barnell also stated that reports regarding the ammunition shortage and the disagreement between Trump and Hegseth were “equally imaginary.”
