Little Flamingo

We are accustomed to seeing flamingos in their vibrant colors, such as pink, red, and white. However, their chicks are not born with these hues; at the beginning of their lives, they are gray or brown, gradually changing color as they grow.

This distinctive coloration results from their diet, which is rich in natural pigments, particularly carotenoids. Consequently, a flamingo’s color also indicates its diet and stage of development. The chick in the photo is less than one year old.

With the seasonal return of migratory seabirds, including flamingos, some chicks can now be seen accompanying the flocks, whose numbers increase as the weather moderates. These birds spend the autumn and winter seasons in Kuwait Bay, where their preferred food sources are abundant. It is worth noting that breeding records for this beautiful bird in Kuwait are extremely rare.
