North Korea on Wednesday signaled it was considering “additional military options” in response to what it described as Japan’s ambitions to once again become a “war criminal state,” accusing the United States of supporting Tokyo’s rearmament and enhancing its military capabilities.

The warning came in a statement issued by Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). It characterized Japan’s recent military moves, including the test launch of long-range Tomahawk missiles and participation in U.S.-led military exercises in the Philippines, as reflecting “a rapid trend toward military expansion,” according to Yonhap News Agency.

Kim stated that “Japan, a war criminal state, is accelerating its transformation into a militaristic state by exploiting escalating geopolitical conflicts and confrontations between blocs on the international stage,” adding that these moves prove that Tokyo’s efforts to build capabilities for launching preemptive attacks “have entered the stage of actual implementation.”

Kim affirmed that Pyongyang “will not remain a passive observer” to what it described as Japan’s military developments, noting that the North Korean military leadership would put forward “additional military options” in response to what it deemed dangerous shifts in Japan’s military policy.
