In the Balance of Meaning: Don’t Adapt to the Problem… Design a Solution for It
One of the most dangerous developments for societies is becoming accustomed to their problems. When a problem recurs, it does not become less harmful; rather, it becomes more acceptable. Over time, the question shifts from “How do we solve it?” to “How do we adapt to it?” And this is where the real problem begins.
Adapting to reality may be necessary in certain circumstances, but it should not become a permanent culture. Societies that merely adapt to their problems cease to investigate their root causes and gradually lose their capacity for innovation. Therefore, social innovation does not begin with the question: “How do we coexist with the problem?” It begins with a fundamentally different question: “How can we redesign reality so that this problem diminishes or disappears?”
The difference between adaptation and designing solutions is the difference between those who build a bridge over a river every time it floods, and those who seek the cause of the floods and prevent them from recurring.
In many social issues, we have become accustomed to innovating ways to adapt: we adapt to traffic congestion instead of reorganizing traffic flow; we adapt to recurring needs instead of building pathways for empowerment; we adapt to delayed diagnosis of certain diseases instead of designing systems for early detection; and we adapt to fragmented services instead of redesigning them in a more integrated manner.
Perhaps this adaptation has mitigated the problem’s impact, but it has not moved us closer to solving it.
This is where social innovation comes into play. It does not view the problem as an unchangeable reality, but as an opportunity for rethinking. It does not ask: “How can we help people endure the current reality?” Instead, it asks: “How can we create a better reality?”
Consequently, the institutions that will lead the future are not those that excel at adapting to challenges, but those that possess the ability to design new solutions for them. Adaptation preserves reality as it is, whereas designing solutions transforms reality into what it ought to be.
Progress is not measured by our capacity to endure problems, but by our ability to reduce the need to endure them.
Social innovation is not about helping society adapt to its crises, but about empowering it with the courage and knowledge to redesign solutions. The future is not shaped by those who have become accustomed to reality, but by those who believe that reality can be better.
