Gold stabilizes amid Middle East tensions and anticipation of the US interest rate trajectory

Gold prices stabilized today amid investor uncertainty regarding the Federal Reserve’s interest rate trajectory, as market participants monitored developments in the Middle East for signs of a diplomatic resolution to the war with Iran.

Spot gold prices saw little change, settling at $4,052.86 per ounce, while US gold futures rose 0.5 percent to $4,111.70.

Ricardo Evangelista, an analyst at Active Traders, stated, “Gold prices have remained confined to a narrow range over the past few weeks, fluctuating almost entirely between $4,000 and $4,100, due to investor uncertainty about the Federal Reserve’s interest rate path.”

He added, “The past 24 hours have not yielded any significant change in this situation.” John Williams, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, expressed optimism that inflationary pressures are on the right track toward a gradual decline. He noted that if this trend does not materialize, the US central bank will not hesitate to respond by raising interest rates. Traders currently price in a 63 percent probability of a rate hike in September, following the Federal Reserve’s decision to hold rates steady at its latest meeting, which was marked by divergent views among policymakers.

On the geopolitical front, conflicting signals from Washington and Tehran regarding talks aimed at ending the war that erupted five months ago have heightened uncertainty today. The latest attack on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz has once again highlighted risks threatening global energy flows.

The increase in energy costs resulting from the conflict has fueled fears of rising inflation, thereby increasing the likelihood of tighter monetary policy by the Federal Reserve. Demand for gold, which yields no return, tends to decline when interest rates rise. Among other precious metals, spot silver rose 0.8 percent to $58.66 per ounce, platinum gained 1.6 percent to $1,653.53, and palladium increased 1.2 percent to $1,280.50.
