Venezuela and the Dominican Republic agree to restore diplomatic relations

Venezuela and the Dominican Republic have agreed on a plan to restore bilateral relations that were severed two years ago, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday.

In a statement, the ministry said that the governments of both countries agreed to begin a gradual process of normalizing diplomatic and consular relations “based on a roadmap to be established by mutual agreement,” following a dialogue between the two sides.

The statement added that “this decision comes in response to the shared interest in strengthening institutional communication channels, which will benefit the citizens of both countries and the historical friendship ties between Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.”

Venezuela and the Dominican Republic had severed diplomatic relations in July 2024, after Caracas accused Santo Domingo of interfering in its internal affairs in the wake of the Venezuelan presidential elections.
