Al-Jarida Exclusive | Latest proposal on 'Hormuz': Opening the Middle Passage under Iranian-Omani supervision

A source in Iran’s Supreme National Security Council told Al-Jarida that Iran has not received any new proposals regarding the Strait of Hormuz, and that negotiations between Tehran and Muscat over the strait are still ongoing according to the previous format.

The source added that communications between Iran and the United States have intensified in recent days, with Turkey joining mediation efforts led by Pakistan and Qatar, although no agreement has been reached so far.

He clarified that the core sticking point in the negotiations currently lies in Washington’s insistence on reopening the Strait of Hormuz to its pre-war status, in contrast to Iran’s firm stance that halting the war is a prerequisite for restoring normal navigation through the strait.

He noted that the latest ideas put forward on the negotiating table between Tehran and Muscat involve opening the middle channel of the strait to commercial vessels, with passage subject to joint monitoring by Iranian and Omani forces, while prohibiting the transit of warships or vessels carrying military equipment or troops.
