US Warns Companies of Skilled North Korean Scammers

The U.S. Department of State and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warned on Friday that internet platforms operated by companies for procurement, hiring, and contracting purposes are being targeted by North Korean IT specialists posing as individuals from other countries.

Officials stated that these remote workers aim to secure contracts with such companies, with the ultimate goal of channeling the earnings from this work to fund the North Korean government, according to Bloomberg News.

The State Department and the FBI reminded the public that the United States had previously warned about such operations, but noted that fraudsters are increasingly using more advanced artificial intelligence tools to conceal their identities and expand the scope of their activities.

In March, the U.S. Department of the Treasury reported that these schemes are funding North Korea’s nuclear program and generated approximately $800 million in revenue in 2024.

The United States also warned that companies are at risk of losing sensitive data and information. This warning was issued jointly with the governments of Japan, France, Australia, and other countries.
