UN Security Council holds informal vote on candidates for UN Secretary-General

The Security Council held its first informal vote today on candidates for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, succeeding the current incumbent.

The Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the United Nations, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council for the month of July, stated, “The first round of informal voting has taken place.”

He added, speaking to journalists after the conclusion of the secret informal vote, “The candidates will be informed of the results through the Permanent Representatives of the member states that nominated them. The President of the UN General Assembly will also be informed about the informal voting process.”

Article 97 of the UN Charter stipulates that the General Assembly appoints the Secretary-General upon the recommendation of the Security Council.
