Does Trump's name explain his political behavior?

The name of US President Donald Trump evokes linguistic reflection, as the word “Trump” in English means to overcome, prevail, and defeat, and is also used in card games to refer to the “winning card” that decides the round.

Notably, this meaning aligns with the image he projects in politics, which is based on winning, dominance, and striking the “best deal.”

Ibn al-Qayyim, in his work “Tuhfat al-Mawdud,” noted that there may be a correspondence between names and their bearers, which can manifest in their character and behavior, but he emphasized that this is not a consistent rule, nor does it mean that a name determines destiny or personality. Islam has paid special attention to names, with the Prophet ﷺ saying: “The names you love most in the sight of Allah are Abdullah and Abd al-Rahman” (narrated by Muslim). The Prophet ﷺ would change names with undesirable meanings and would take good omens from pleasant names, as he said upon the arrival of Suhayl ibn Amr: “Your affairs will become easy for you” (narrated by al-Bukhari). The name Trump may serve as an example of the alignment between its linguistic connotation and the political image its bearer strives to entrench, without asserting a causal relationship between the name and behavior.
