Teenagers: Between Opportunity and Challenge

Social media has become an integral part of teenagers’ lives, no longer serving merely as platforms for communication and entertainment, but evolving into spaces for learning, content creation, and expression of opinion. Amid this widespread proliferation, a critical question arises: Do these platforms help build young people’s awareness, or do they negatively affect their behavior and mental health? There is no doubt that social media has provided significant opportunities for acquiring knowledge, developing skills, and fostering creativity. Conversely, however, it can become a source of anxiety and digital addiction if misused. Excessive use may weaken family interactions, increase exposure to cyberbullying, disrupt sleep and concentration, and fuel constant social comparisons that can undermine teenagers’ self-confidence. Consequently, responsibility does not rest solely with families; it extends to schools, media outlets, and relevant institutions, which must promote digital literacy and raise awareness about the safe and responsible use of technology to protect our youth and reinforce their values and identity. In Kuwait, given the widespread use of smartphones and social media platforms, there is an increasing need for awareness programs and initiatives targeting teenagers, helping them achieve a balance between the digital world and real life. Social media is not inherently problematic; the issue lies in how it is used. When teenagers leverage it effectively, it becomes a tool for knowledge and success; misusing it, however, can lead to wasted time and adverse impacts on their future. Therefore, building a generation that is digitally aware and responsible represents a genuine investment in the nation’s future.
