Infantino: Proposal to sell World Cup shares, not mandatory

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on Wednesday that the plan to sell shares in the World Cup is a proposal, not a mandate.

FIFA announced this week plans to create a subsidiary company to manage the World Cup and other events, stating it would offer up to 20 percent of its shares to investors. This move sparked angry reactions from some of the sport’s regional confederations.

In a video posted by FIFA on Wednesday, Infantino said, “It is part of a democratic process and, above all, it is an opportunity, not a mandate. As I said, it initiates a consultation process.”
