Chelsea puts final touches on Welbeck deal

The English football club Chelsea is putting the finishing touches on the signing of Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, after receiving permission to conduct a medical examination at Stamford Bridge.

The BBC reported that Welbeck, 35, plans to join his new club in Hong Kong next week to prepare for the new season, where he is set to sign a two-year contract.

This move is part of a recruitment drive led by new manager Xabi Alonso to add experience to Chelsea’s squad, which was the youngest in the English Premier League over the past two seasons.

The heavy focus on signing young players was considered one of the factors that prevented Chelsea from consistently competing for major titles. Welbeck, who previously played for Manchester United and Arsenal, has scored 90 goals in 400 league matches. He is also Brighton’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, having joined the club on a free transfer from Watford in 2021.
