Election of the first woman as President of the Algerian People's National Assembly (Parliament)

Today, Dr. Khalida Boufadja, a physician and member of parliament for the National Liberation Front (FLN) party, was elected President of the People’s National Assembly, becoming the first woman to head the Algerian parliament since its establishment in 1977.
Boufadja, the MP representing the wilaya of Algiers, received 302 votes during the session to elect the Assembly’s president, securing a decisive lead over her rivals and assuming leadership of the country’s primary legislative institution.
