Foreign Ministry: Kuwait has consolidated its standing in human rights and women's empowerment within the justice system

This came during a lecture delivered by Al-Sabah today at a scientific symposium organized by the Kuwait Institute for Judicial and Legal Studies, titled “UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security: International Commitments and National Applications – The Experience of the State of Kuwait,” in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by the Department of Human Rights Affairs, and moderated by the Institute’s Deputy Director for Communications, Relations, and Research, Advisor Dr. Ahmed Al-Maqaled.

Al-Sabah stated that Kuwait has paid great attention to implementing the resolution by establishing a National Committee chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to coordinate efforts among relevant entities, raise awareness, build capacity, and enhance institutional cooperation in line with international best practices. She noted that this symposium is part of the Committee’s efforts to disseminate awareness of the resolution’s objectives and strengthen national capacity-building to support its implementation.

In this regard, Al-Sabah told KUNA after the symposium that UN Security Council Resolution 1325, adopted by the Council in 2000, marked a qualitative leap in recognizing the pivotal role of women in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and protection during armed conflicts.

She added that Kuwait has made progress in empowering women within the justice system, noting that the number of female prosecutors and judges in Kuwait reached 122, accounting for 8 percent, alongside the appointment of the first female Deputy Minister of Justice and the presence of 27 court clerks.

She expressed her hope that Kuwaiti female judges will attain senior positions in international courts, emphasizing that women’s empowerment in the justice sector constitutes one of the fundamental pillars for achieving sustainable development and enhancing security and peace.
