UN Secretary-General calls for the immediate lifting of all sanctions on Syria

UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the steps that contributed to easing sanctions imposed on Syria, noting that they have opened new horizons for economic recovery.

In a press conference held at the conclusion of his two-day visit to Syria, Guterres stressed that “all these sanctions must be lifted immediately,” calling on the international community to provide sustained political support, economic engagement, and practical assistance to help Syria rebuild after years of conflict.

He described the transitional phase as “a rare moment in the life of a people” and an opportunity to open “a new chapter” in which all Syrians can see themselves as part of their country’s future, adding: “The United Nations stands with the Syrian people at this pivotal moment. Syrians have shown exceptional resilience throughout years of suffering, and they should not bear the burden of recovery alone.”

The Secretary-General noted that the path ahead for Syria would not be easy, but emphasized that the country now has an exceptional opportunity to shape its future, calling in this regard for the necessary support to ensure the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of refugees and internally displaced persons.

Guterres reiterated his condemnation of ongoing Israeli violations of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, stating that “the Golan Heights are originally Syrian land.”
