Southern Europe... on Fire

Violent wildfires, fueled by strong winds and high temperatures, continue to ravage several areas in southern Europe, particularly in Italy, Spain, and France, forcing authorities today to evacuate thousands more people from a tourist region.

The fires have claimed the lives of three firefighters, two in France and one in Italy.

Data from Copernicus satellites, analyzed and released by the French Press Agency (AFP) today, show that the current year ranks second in terms of burned area within the European Union over the past two decades. Forests have become increasingly flammable due to severe drought affecting vegetation and soil for months, a situation exacerbated by exceptional heatwaves that swept across the continent in June and July.

An international team of scientists confirmed today that human-induced climate change, particularly the use of fossil fuels, has worsened the severe drought affecting Europe and contributed to record-breaking temperatures.

In southwestern France, firefighters continue to battle two major blazes, one of which has consumed more than 2,000 hectares north of the Arcachon Basin in Gironde, a popular tourist area near Bordeaux. No casualties have been reported so far.

In Italy, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced the death of a firefighter yesterday while battling flames in southern Italy, where dozens of fires are consuming forests and vegetation in Sicily, fueled by hot winds.

Firefighters reported evacuating approximately 100 residents and 22 patients from a clinic in the center of the island yesterday, as temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius in recent days.
