Ukraine requests emergency UN Security Council meeting after Russian attacks on ships in the Black Sea

Ukraine’s acting Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, said on Wednesday that Ukraine had requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on July 27, following Russian attacks on ships in the Black Sea.

In a statement posted on the X platform, Sybiha said that at least three civilian cargo vessels had recently been attacked, resulting in the deaths and injuries of dozens of crew members.

He noted that any ship that had not passed through the Ukrainian maritime corridor in the Black Sea during the peak of the harvest season was being targeted, describing this as deliberate economic and humanitarian terrorism, and asserting that Russia was holding global food security hostage.

He called on the international community, particularly affected countries, to demand that Russia immediately cease its attacks on freedom of navigation in the Black Sea, emphasizing the need for an international stance to stop what he described as “Russian terrorism.”
