London and Berlin pledge to continue cooperation, support Ukraine, and pressure Russia

British Prime Minister Anji Burnham and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz agreed, during a phone call on Monday, to continue close cooperation between their countries and to advance the implementation of the Kensington Treaty, according to the German government.

The treaty, a bilateral friendship agreement, was signed in London on July 17, 2025, by Merz and Burnham’s predecessor, Keir Starmer.

Regarding the Russian war on Ukraine, the two leaders agreed to continue providing comprehensive support to Kyiv and to increase pressure on Russia, the German government said, adding that they remain committed to conducting serious negotiations aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace.

Earlier on Monday, Burnham held phone calls with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Merz had earlier congratulated Burnham and invited him to visit Berlin soon.
