Andy Burnham reshuffles the British government and dismisses several of Starmer's ministers

British Prime Minister Anji Burnham has appointed John Helly as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Ed Miliband as Foreign Secretary, while Shabana Mahmood retained her post as Home Secretary, as part of a cabinet reshuffle in which Burnham sidelined close allies of his predecessor, Keir Starmer.

According to the British news agency PA Media, David Lamy, Rachel Reeves, and Steve Reid were among the senior ministers who left the government by decision of the new Prime Minister.

Helly, who recently resigned as Defence Secretary in Starmer’s government following a dispute over military funding, is one of the leading figures in the Labour Party and is regarded as a reliable and experienced personality.

Helly said that being entrusted with this important position represented the “greatest honour,” adding, “Together we will build a new economy, create new hope, and advance the interests of workers and the working class in this country.”

Prominent Labour leader Ed Miliband was moved from the Department for Energy to the Foreign Office, while Shabana Mahmood retained her position at the Home Office.

There had been speculation that the Chancellorship would be offered to Mahmood, but she chose to remain at the Home Office to complete the controversial reforms she had introduced to the asylum system.
